The Aztec Account of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico

The Aztec Account of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico Miguel Leon-Portilla's book â€Å"The Broken Spears† Introduction Other resources: †¢Aztec Life †¢Mexica Culture †¢Mexica Medicine †¢Religion of the Modern Aztlan Movement †¢Religion of the Mexica ; Bibliography †¢Major Deitites of the Mexica †¢Minor Deitites of the Mexica †¢Aztec Cannibalism: An Ecological Necessity? Path of the Conquest On November 8, 1519, the Spanish conquistadors first entered the great city of Mexico, the metropolis the Aztecs had built on a lake island.Don Hernando Cortes, who was accompanied by six hundred Spaniards and a great many native allies, at last could see for himself the temples and palaces about which he had heard so many marvels. The Spaniards arrived from the direction of Tlalpan, to the south of the city, passing across one of the wide causeways that connected the island with the mainland. When they reached a locality known as Xoloco, they were wel comed by the last of the Motecuhzomas, who had come out to meet them in the belief that the white men must be Quetzalcoatll and other gods, returning at last from across the waters now known as the Gulf of Mexico. Thus Cortes and his men entered the city, not only as guests, but also as gods coming home. It was the first direct encounter between one of the most extraordinary pre-Columbian cultures and the strangers who would eventually destroy it. Cortes landed on the coast at Veracruz on Good Friday, April 22, 1519; the Aztec capital surrendered to him on August 13, 1521. The events that took place between these two dates have been recounted in a number of chronicles and other writings, of which the best known are the letters Cortes wrote to King Charles V and the True History of the Conquest of Mexico by Bernal Diaz del Castillo. These two works, along with a few others also written by Spaniards, until now have been almost the only basis on which historians have judged the conquest of one of the greatest civilizations in pre-Columbian America. But these chronicles present only one side of the story, that of the conquerors. For some reason-scorn, perhaps-historians have failed to consider that the conquered might have set down their own version in their own language. This book is the fir

Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo Essay

Both novels, the Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) and the El Filibusterismo, (The Filibuster) inspired by the patriotic ideals of national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, depict the abuses suffered by the native indios at the hands of Spanish tyrants. The Noli paints us an ugly, yet clear picture of the so-called â€Å"social cancer† that deteriorates the society. The first of those two masterfully-crafted works, the Noli lays the most liberal, realistic and fearless view of the country’s well-being during the 300-year Spanish regime. It illustrates the rotten system of governance, the illicit ways of the church and the unfavorable trade of the privilege class. The Noli also relates how the government, the church and the privilege class manipulate the people. The government deprives the youth of education and how they use the people’s ignorance to their advantage. The treacherous friars by means of God and faith controlled the people, making them dummies of all sorts. On the other hand, the privilege class used their elite status to get ahead of everybody, by hook or by crook — employing the â€Å"me first† attitude. In the Noli, the weak and disposed seemingly lose hope resulting to unfortunate deaths (as the case Pilisopo Tasyo) and sometimes insanity. (as the case of Sisa) Hence the oppressed formed a brotherhood that hopes to liberate the country by use of force. To no avail, due to disorganization and lack of arms, each and every attempt at resistance failed. In Noli, the character of Juan Crisostomo Ibarra was introduced, an intelligent and promising young man who has high hopes of changing the course of the country.

'Short and harsh'. Is this a fair description of life for the majority Essay

'Short and harsh'. Is this a fair description of life for the majority of 'ordinary' rural Scots between 1300 and 1500 - Essay Example It was essentially a pandemic which had severe social and drastic economic consequences therefore a discussion of these effects becomes very important when we are dealing with the social issues of the time. The Plague came to Europe from the East through trade routes that had ships which carried the Bubonic Plague. It hit Europe during an economic recession and only caused the economy to go down further (Bolton, 1970). Anyone struck with the plague would be dead within three to five days and some towns lost as much as 90% of their population within a matter of months. The rural areas were also affected by the plague even though the extent of the disease was comparatively lower. It was indeed a horrible experience as major European cities such as Venice and Pisa lost more than 70% of their population. Modern estimates show us that 25 million people died in Europe within a period of just five years between 1347 and 1352. The reaction to so many people dying at once was naturally one of fear and hatred. Fear of the wrath of god which started the Flagellant Movement and the fear of the outsider such as Jews who were blamed for having caused the plague. Artists also created works of art to deal with the huge number of dead and dying they saw around them and saints were made of individuals such as St. Roch and St. Sebastian who took it upon themselves to help the sick in those times. While Scotland was already in trouble before the plague, the coming of the plague only made matters worse (Hale et. al., 1965). The agricultural system in particular suffered greatly since the output was not high enough during those years to create food surpluses. In this manner, the plague only lowered the standard of living for many Scots. The church which was present in Scotland and across Europe was simply unable to deal with the disease and

Some of this attribute is discussed in the following paragraphs in detail. First, is the logo â€Å"swoosh† which is the company’s signature or trademark. With or without the name Nike underneath the logo, the general consumers can perceive the logo and visualize Nike. Regardless of a check of excellence, the flowing nature of the logo has played a vital role in the marketing of the brand. The role of visual rhetoric is to influence the company’s targeted consumers visually.  Ã‚     The logo visually ties into the early gods of sports, elaborating its achievement as a successful, recognizable, and uncomplicated trademark. Second, the attribute is the slogan â€Å"Just Do It† which is the tag-line allied with the Nike logo. Together, the tag-line and the logo feature the importance of Nike’s brand objectives and ideals; victory and athleticism. The design of both logo and the slogan has emerged as a motto and the way of life for Nike’s consumers (Palmer, 2009). The Nike slogan and the logo serve to identify consumers as icons for action and excellence. When the consumers read the word â€Å"Just Do It†, the word is defining content; however, they do not reflect it visually. The slogan provides distinction and identification. The word â€Å"Just Do It† is distinct in its content. It means do not talk about it, do not ask, do not regret it, do not think, but just do it (Hawkins, 2013).

Bird Flu Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Bird Flu - Research Paper Example Bird flu in humans is similar to the average influenza, so detecting it and diagnosing it can be, at times, difficult. Symptoms can be a bit more harsh than a typical flu and can sometimes lead to death in those with a weaker immune system. Like the average flu, bird flu can be passed from person to person; unfortunately, while the same medications used in the human influenza can be used to treat bird flu, the virus tends to become immune to the effects of the human influenza vaccine, making it helpless against treating the virus. There are also other varying viruses that come from the bird flu microorganism, so symptoms and the threats on life can differ between which type of virus the person has. Bird flu is a virus that is passed from system to system, whether it is by bird or human. Like all microorganisms, bird flu can be carried by means of hands, therefore being capable of being passed on by merely touching another person that has the disease. Bird flu shares many symptoms and traits to a normal flu, so it is spread in the same way. People need to be careful how they handle food, and make sure that they wash their hands after making contact with something that has had previous contact with other hands. This microorganism is a bacteria, so while it may not be seen, it can most definitely be present in an area. This microorganism is transmitted to humans through indirect and direct contact. While it cannot be caught while eating poultry that has been infected by the disease (Mohamed Saif, 2005), it can still be caught by touching surfaces that the poultry has been on or by making physical contact with a bird that has it. Indirectly, bird flu can be caught in the same way as other diseases that are passed on by humans. The microorganism is found in birds and can be passed down to humans; its original environment is within the

Perform an investigation and mettalurgical examination of an Essay

Perform an investigation and mettalurgical examination of an industrial component - Essay Example It refers to the procedures used in extracting metals from ore, as well as to the processes related to metals purification and alloy production. It is divided into two subtypes the Process metallurgy and Physical metallurgy. Process metallurgy refers to the ways in producing metals like its refining process through electrolysis or selective oxidation of impurities. On the other hand, Physical Metallurgy studies the structure of metals based on their composition and treatment. It is also concerned with the scientific principles and engineering applications employed in metals fabrication and treatments, and how metal products hold up under their industrial usages. Component manufacturers a lot much of their time in study what type of material is best suited for a certain Products. Every little aspect of the materials is a great issue to them because they want their products to be well equipped for any possible things to happen. They are also concerned to the safety and satisfaction of the Customers. The limitation of their products must be properly stated because they are held liable for whatever accident that might happen in using their products. To perform the said study, we investigate and examined the metallurgy of a gas adaptor (Industrial component). We use gas adaptor as our material because we usually noticed that this material is always exposed to heat and by this we are curious about its composition. We are also concerned with the manufacturing processes of this component on how it comes up to a finished product. This study will enrich our understanding with the proper ways and methods in identifying a certain components, not only of its physical appearance but its chemical composition and capability for a certain application. 1.) We cut a sample of the metal (Gas adaptor), using a metal cutter in a circular shape. In cutting the sample we make sure that it is enough for the investigation. Upon cutting the sample aside from its outside

The task is to review EuroJet's foreign exchange exposure Coursework

The task is to review EuroJet's foreign exchange exposure - Coursework Example In addition to this, as has been noted in the case study that the company plans to opt for one of the two options for expansion, which include expansion of network to intercontinental destinations and growth of existing network, the report also provides an evaluation of the risks associated with these two options in terms of foreign exchange risk and international environment risks. Besides this, a critical review of the literature pertaining to foreign exchange risk has been provided in the appendix at the end of this report. Management of Foreign Exchange Risk Having noted the fact that Euro Jet is faced with a risk of foreign exchange exposure due to fact that its revenues are earned under different currencies’ denominations, it is therefore pertinent to understand first that what is foreign exchange exposure risk and how it influences a company’s revenues. Moreover, the understanding of different risks and methods to manage them is likely to result in determining an approach which is more suited to the needs and requirements of Euro Jet. Foreign Exchange Exposure Risk The foreign exchange exposure risk refers to the expected gain or loss incurred due to fluctuations in the exchange rate (Arnold & Kumar, 2008; Moles et al., 2011). The foreign exchange risk resulting from fluctuations in the exchange rate may impact the overall cash flows, revenues, assets and liabilities and other items of financial statements of a company. In other words, the changes in foreign exchange rates result in the changes in a firm’s value, which may be favourable or an unfavourable change (Madura, 1989). Companies having operations in more than one country, like Euro Jet, are projected to risks associated with foreign exchange fluctuations. The risks associated with foreign exchange fluctuations may be categorised into three main types, which are as follows: Transaction Risks This risk relates to the risks associated with cash flows, i.e. the impact of changes in the exchange rates on revenues receivable, expenses payable, and other payments to be made to shareholders and third parties (Arnold & Kumar, 2008; Moles et al., 2011). Translation Risks This risk refers to the impact of change in foreign exchange rates on the value of a company. The impact of changes in foreign exchange rates is translated and reflected in the balance sheet of the company (Arnold & Kumar, 2008; Moles et al., 2011). Economic Risks This risk relates to the exchange rate fluctuations translated in the present value of operating cash flows to earned in future by a company. In other words, this risk relates to impact of changes in foreign exchange rates on the earnings of a company (Arnold & Kumar, 2008; Moles et al., 2011). Keeping in view this discussion of the foreign exchange risk and its various types, the approaches for managing foreign exchange exposure risk can be discussed as under. Approaches for Managing Foreign Exchange Exposure Risk In order to manage f oreign exchange exposure risk, the most common and widely applied approach by both financial and non-financial business entities is the use of hedging. However, hedging has also various types and therefore various hedging approaches can be followed by business entities, and particularly by Euro Jet. Hedging refers to dealing with risk for a company resulting from exposure to

Conflict Management and Negotiation Critical Thinking Essay - 1

Conflict Management and Negotiation Critical Thinking - Essay Example It is imperative for businesspeople to develop their negotiation skills. Investing in training and development lessons in negotiation for the marketing department workers is a very wise investment. The marketing department is directly responsible of generating sales for the company (Kotler, 2003). Sales are the engine that drives a company. The purpose of this paper is to discuss and analyze the negotiation process for a job offer with Joe Tech and Robust Routers. As a prospective employee for the company my first strategy during the initial talks of the negotiation is to establish how strong a candidate I am for the position based on my educational and work experience credentials. I would come prepare with the most recent HR data on compensation for professionals in my career. The data from a reputable source reveals that the $92,000 based salary is within the boundaries of what another professional with similar credentials receives. The overall benefits packaged on the table are very reasonable based on the industry standards. During the negotiation process I will ensure that I use good active listening. By becoming a better listener, you will improve your productivity, as well as your ability to influence, persuade and negotiate† (Mindtools., 2013). I must act confident through the entire negotiations and my mindset must be positive. There are several things and can help a person achieve a successful employment negotiation. The person applying for a job vacancy must dress in a professional manner preferably in a suit for the first interview with the human resource representative or manager of the company. A second important tip for a person in the job application process is to perform research on the firm by searching information from different sources including the corporate website of the company and its annual report. All public companies are mandated to file annual reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Within the content of the annual report are the financial statements of a company (Sec, 2013). Analyzing the financial performance of the company is a good topic to bring up during the conversations of the negotiation. The employer will realize that the candidate came prepared to the negotiation table which shows competence. There are different negotiation strategies that can be used to obtain a p ositive outcome that allows the parties to reach a deal. These strategies can provide outcomes that result in win-win or win-lose outcomes. â€Å"In a successful negotiation, it’s up to each side to paint a vision – based on that side’s mission and purpose – which the other side evaluates as being beneficial or not† (Camp, 2013). In the negotiation process I must persuade the other party to visualize my proposition as a win-win outcome or win for them and lose for me. I have to reflect to the employer my value as a professional and that by hiring me the firm will increase its human capital tremendously. A lot can be learned about the parties involved during the initial negotiation process. The character of the person, communication style, personality, and body language are things that influence the conversations of a negotiation. A good negotiator is able to persuade and convince others (Sfh, 2007). During the early part of the negotiation it becom es notable whether the person negotiating has good verbal communication skills. The ability to communicate well will affect the negotiation from the start until the closure of the event. Compromising the terms of the labor contract now in hopes of being able to negotiate better terms in the future is a risky strategy. The compensation that a company owes an employee is stipulated in the term of the employment contract. If an employee signs a contract with a verbal
